Four male nurses from Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University in the third batch of medical teams in Jiangsu Province received special attention from public opinion. Some media reports call them "inch plate Men’s Team", and some netizens call them "the most beautiful male nurse" … …
"At that time, we were going to Wuhan, and more than 30 medical institutions met at Lukou Airport. There are many people on the scene and many media. The four of us were dressed in uniform, all wearing red scarves, and inch plate, who was shaved close to the bald head, was surrounded by many reporters. " Gu Deyu, a nurse in the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Zhongda Hospital, said that after the photos were posted on the Internet, the four of them unconsciously gained the nickname "inch plate Men’s Team".
Starting from February 2, he went to the front line of Wuhan to fight the epidemic and returned on April 12. In 71 days, the "inch plate" on the heads of Gu Deyu and his colleagues Zheng Zhizhou, Gao Wei and Deng Meng has gradually become dense. The increase in the number of nurses is not only a portrayal of the four young male nurses’ careers moving towards calmness, but also a testimony of the medical staff in ICU fighting against the disease, and it is also a microcosm of the medical teams from all over the world helping Hubei gather sand into a tower.
"I originally burned my head and planned to have a blind date for the New Year … …”
On April 27th, the reporter came to Zheng Zhizhou’s home. The day before, Zheng Zhizhou, like the other three male nurses, ended his 14-day isolation observation after returning from Wuhan to Nanjing. The cameraman suggested that he take off his mask and face the camera. Zheng Zhizhou took off his mask and took out a certificate from his pocket, which was stamped with the red seal of the community and the hospital.
As early as years ago, after learning the information of COVID-19 epidemic situation, Zhongda Hospital gave medical staff special training on infection prevention and control in advance. Therefore, Zheng Zhizhou and his colleagues did not feel that the incident was sudden when they received the initiative to help Hubei in the hospital.
"I didn’t hand in any gauntlet. The head nurse sent a call initiative on WeChat group. At that time, almost everyone sent out their names, like solitaire. I am not the first one anyway, but I picked it up when I saw the information. " Zheng Zhizhou said that without excitement or fear, he felt that he should go to the front to do something.
When Zhongda Hospital issued the initiative, it was on February 1st. On that night, some medical staff also worked the night shift, and the next day, they went to Wuhan with the third batch of Hubei medical teams aided by Jiangsu Province.
Of the four male nurses, three have been promoted to nursing fathers, and only Gu Deyu is still single. Years ago, Gu Deyu went back to his hometown in Anhui and got a fashionable haircut. My aunt also introduced him to a beautiful girl on a blind date. We were supposed to meet the next day. Unfortunately, a phone call in the courtyard informed everyone to go back to Nanjing to gather and prepare to support Wuhan. Gu Deyu didn’t think too much, so he rushed back and the blind date was gone.
Gu Deyu’s hair is hard, and she usually softens it by perming it, so that she can take care of it. "I haven’t shaved inch plate since I can remember, and I was still struggling. However, after thinking about going to Wuhan, my hair is too long, and it takes too much time to clean it every day. It is not convenient to wear protective clothing and hats, and it is even easy to be attached by viruses. "
After much deliberation, Gu Deyu and three colleagues finally decided to shave inch plate. During the Chinese New Year, the barber shop didn’t open, so they asked the hospital leaders and colleagues to help "operate the knife".
Shaving hair and changing hands … … Because of the hurry, the medical staff had little time to pack their personal belongings. Colleagues in the left-behind courtyard will pack their bags for them in too many cooks.
Zheng Zhizhou clearly remembers that he took three personal items from home: ID card, mobile phone and charger. "The yard sent everyone a suitcase, packed. When Wuhan opens it, boy, like a treasure chest, there are slippers, masks, hand sanitizer and even nail clippers. "
Their jobs: nurses, carers and cleaners.
After arriving in Wuhan, the "inch plate Men’s Team" was sent to the Sino-French New Town Campus in tongji hospital, Wuhan. In the intensive care unit, four people have to face critically ill patients with pneumonia in Covid-19 every day, many of whom are accompanied by basic diseases and complex complications.
Their daily job is to play three roles — — Nurse: Observe the change of illness and treat the patient according to the doctor’s advice; Caregiver: the patient’s daily routine and diet, defecation and urination, turning over and patting the back, all meticulous care; Cleaning: by the way, do a good job of daily cleaning in the ward.
"It’s true that Vulcan Mountain and Thunder God Mountain hospital circulating on the Internet spend eighteen thousand yuan a month on cleaning. The risk is high, and few people are really willing to do it. Some people go to work for four hours a day, and go back when they come in the morning. People are also worried. " Gu Deyu said that he can fully understand that everyone has family members, and if they can bear an extra burden in the ward, they can make others take less risks.
Wearing protective clothing tastes bad, and it lasts for four to six hours. "That feeling is like wearing a poncho next to your body. It’s like running in heavy rain when you work. It’s raining outside and inside, and you can’t breathe." Zheng Zhizhou broke out in rashes on his hands, feet and inner thighs due to long-term sweltering and sweating.
"When I first arrived in Wuhan, I had no experience. I drank too much water before work, and it was easy to sweat and want to go to the toilet. Later, I didn’t eat or drink water for 4 hours before entering the ward, and I didn’t have to go to the toilet. I sweated a lot less, and with a little medicine, eczema gradually got better. " Zheng Zhizhou and his colleagues tried their best to leave precious time for patients, and some medical staff even prepared adult diapers with them.
Gao Wei told reporters that it is very convenient to puncture blood vessels without gloves on weekdays. However, in Wuhan isolation ward, at least three layers of rubber gloves should be worn, so it is not so clear to find blood vessels, for fear that one needle cannot be inserted.
What makes Gao Wei unforgettable is that a patient told him that I am not afraid of pain if you take your time, so be careful not to stab yourself. In that case, we can also consider the difficulties of medical staff. When hearing this, Gao Wei choked for a moment and could not speak.
For the four male nurses, they should not only bear the patient’s illness care, diet and daily life, but also give psychological comfort to patients without family members.
In Gu Deyu’s impression, a patient he took over, Ms. Hu, was sent to the hospital on the first day of the New Year’s Day. Due to the change of her condition, she was transferred to several hospitals, and her family members could not be contacted. At that time, she was wearing a ventilator and using sedatives, so she could not communicate normally. It was not until April 2 that the intubation was pulled out that he could breathe and speak on his own. At that time, Gu Deyu wanted to tell her family the news at the first time.
"I can’t find the contact information of my family on the medical record. Ms. Hu reported three phone calls of her wife in a row, all of which were wrong, until the fourth one was opened. Without saying a word, another old man on the other end of the phone had already burst into tears. " Later, the old man told Gu Deyu that he had learned the news of his wife for the first time in two months, and he was very worried about it, but he was afraid of receiving bad news, for fear that the community or funeral home would inform him to take care of the aftermath.
Gu Deyu took over another 54-year-old male patient, who had difficulty breathing when he first entered the hospital. He had to gasp when he got out of bed for a few steps, and he also had great distrust of medical staff. "In Nanjing dialect, compare ‘ Jiasheng ’ Demanding a lot, easily losing his temper and refusing to listen to reason. Let him wear a mask and close the door in the room, and he will do it. " Gu Deyu said that in the face of impatient patients, they try to talk less and do more.
After careful treatment and nursing, about three weeks later, the patient recovered. When he was discharged from the hospital, he wanted to take a photo with the "inch plate Men’s Team" as a souvenir and said a lot of apologies and thanks. "We took a small video in the ward. He held a small national flag and said that he would sing" Singing the Motherland "to thank the Jiangsu medical team and thank the country." Gu Deyu said that everyone’s eyes were wet at the moment when he sang "Five-Star Red Flag fluttered in the wind".
Thanks to the joint efforts of Hubei medical staff from the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Zhongda Hospital, 77 COVID-19 patients in the critical isolation ward in the new town of China and France they took over finally recovered, and none of them died.
"After more than two months in Wuhan, it is false to say that you don’t miss home." Before the expedition, Zheng Zhizhou’s daughter was less than two months old. When he was in Wuhan, he had a video call with his family almost every night.
"The first thing every morning is to look at the changes in the confirmed data. When I first arrived in Wuhan, the value kept rising and began to decline later. In March and April, I began to plan when I could go home. Staring at the number of confirmed cases, it will drop by 500 today and 1000 tomorrow. I feel that every time we cure a patient, we are one step closer to home. "
"There is no gender difference in front of patients."
There are more than 100 nurses in the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Zhongda Hospital, of which male nurses only account for about one fifth. Although everyone signed up this time, four male nurses were given priority in the hospital. Gao Wei believes that the average working life of male nurses in the hospital may be longer, and their physical and psychological abilities to deal with emergencies are stronger.
Male nurse or female nurse? This contrast is not only during the epidemic, but also troubled the male nurses’ recognition of their professional identity.
When Gao Wei went to school, his first choice was medical imaging, and later he was transferred to nursing. "At first, I felt that nursing was all learned by girls, and I was quite faceless. My family also advised me to say that you should repeat it." However, Gao Wei finally resisted the pressure, and with the study, internship and work, the previous concept quietly changed.
Zheng Zhizhou had a similar experience. When he was in college, his nursing major had to be exposed to four major items: "internal medicine, surgery, gynecology and pediatrics", but when he was studying gynecological courses, he and other male students were embarrassed.
"Everyone will encounter these in the future at work. If one day a female patient faints in front of you, won’t she help because she is a woman? Since I chose this profession, there is no gender difference in front of patients. " Zheng Zhizhou’s words were fresh in his memory. He gradually let go of his ideological burden and got the highest score in gynecology class. Now, this is no longer a stumbling block in his work.
"It may be widely felt that men are not as careful and patient as women in nursing." Gu Deyu disagreed, saying that male nurses like "inch plate Men’s Team" have unique advantages in this anti-epidemic process.
For example, Gu Deyu said that many patients with pneumonia need to rest in prone position, that is, sleep on their stomach, which can reduce the burden on the lungs and restore lung function. Because the patient is intubated, there are many medical devices, and it may take five or six people to operate simultaneously when turning him over, which requires high physical strength for nurses. At the same time, physically and psychologically, male nurses are more resistant to stress and life and death.
However, no one can deny that in the 71 days when the "inch plate Men’s Team" fought on the front line, the other half behind them took more responsibility for the family.
After Zheng Zhizhou went out to war, his daughter had to change diapers, nurse and coax her children to Bao Ma. "From my selfishness, I definitely don’t want him to go, because I am a mother for the first time, and I hope he can always take care of me and my daughter. But as a family member of a medical staff, I fully support his decision, and life is above everything else. " Zheng Zhizhou’s wife is also a nurse, and she can understand her lover’s choice.
She said that now the media say they are heroes, and I hope he is a good father. But if I choose again, I still support him to go. When the child grows up, he can tell her the unforgettable years during the epidemic. I believe that in the eyes of his daughter, he is not only a good father, but also a hero. (Reporter Liu Yuxuan)
