Beware of WeChat friends suddenly borrowing money. Your WeChat may be cloned.
(Reporter Ma Dongsheng) If a WeChat friend suddenly sends a message to borrow money from you and promises to pay back the money soon, you should pay attention, because the avatar and circle of friends you see may be cloned by a liar. Yesterday, the People’s Procuratorate of Huai ‘an County, Zhangjiakou City announced a case. The criminal suspect Li used the virtual characteristics of WeChat, a network communication tool, to commit fraud and was arrested by the procuratorate according to law.
The suspect Li has been working for a living since he graduated from junior high school. As a user of WeChat, Li found that the interaction between mutual friends in WeChat can be seen in the circle of friends, so he came up with the idea of defrauding money in the name of others. Since this year, Li has used his own WeChat to frequently add friends by searching nearby people to find the target of committing crimes. After a while, he found that his added WeChat friends Zhonglin and Zhang interacted frequently in the circle of friends. As a result, Li began to steal Lin’s WeChat avatar and constantly copied the same circle of friends and photos as Lin. After two months of preparation, his WeChat looked exactly like Lin’s.
In July this year, Li tried to use the tone of Lin to send Zhang a message that he borrowed 1000 yuan money for emergency and promised to return it at night. The victim Zhang saw the photo of Lin and his circle of friends, so he transferred it to his friend "Lin" (actually Li) 1000 yuan through WeChat. After Li received the money, he returned 1000 yuan to Zhang by WeChat transfer as promised that night, so as to continue to gain Zhang’s trust and defraud more money. One night a week later, Li once again borrowed money from Zhang on the grounds of driving accident in Lin’s tone. Zhang, who was caught in a misunderstanding, immediately transferred the money to "Lin" for an emergency of 13,000 yuan through WeChat. Li immediately transferred the money from WeChat wallet and cancelled the WeChat account. A month later, when Zhang asked Lin for money, he found himself cheated. Zhang and Lin jointly reported the case to the public security organ. After investigation, the public security organ arrested Li. At present, Li has been arrested by the Huai’ an County People’s Procuratorate.
Case Tip: As a network communication tool, WeChat is virtual and untrue. When users are involved in money transfer, they should be relatively vigilant, handle electronic funds with caution, and get in touch with each other by telephone to confirm their identity if necessary, so as not to cause unnecessary losses.
