2024 Land Rover Defender 110 review update
2024 Land Rover Defender 110 review update
Land Rover DefenderJust like the submarine sandwich, there are three lengths to choose from: 90, 110, and 130.Defender 90It is a two-door model, and the Guard 110 is a four-door model.Guard 130It is an extended four-door model with standardThird row of seatsAnd extra cargo space. Defender is to Land Rover whatBroncoforFord,WranglerforJeep,Land CruiserforToyotaHowever, compared to those off-road vehicles, the Defender is more luxurious and refined.
For the 2024 Defender, Land Rover has made some changes:
- The 90 models add more convenient access to the rear seat and now feature a 40/20/40 split-fold design with a center armrest.
- 110 models offer a new County Exterior Pack inspired by traditional style.
- 110 and 130 models have been added493 horsepower,pressurizationV8 engine option (P500).
- The Defender 130 Outbound debuts with five-passenger seats and plenty of cargo space (46.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable up to 88.9 cubic feet).
For this 2024 Defender 110 review, Land Rover is offering a test car with SE trim and the following key options:
- Santorini black exterior paint
- 22-Inch silver wheels
- Premium Upgrade Interior Package
- drag package
- Comfort and Convenience Bag
- Head-up display
In addition, there are many other options available for the test car, causing its base price to skyrocket from $94,775 to $108,263. These prices include putting the SUVfromLand Rover’s assembly plant in Nitra, Slovakia, costs $1,475 for shipping to a local dealer.
In the 2024 Defender series, the 110 is just the right size to comfortably carry five people and a lot of cargo at the same time. Some versions of this SUV offer third-row seats, but this drastically reduces cargo space, leaving little room for luggage.
In addition, the 110 retains a short rear overhang, which contributes to the Defender’s excellent performanceoff-road capabilityEquipped with airsuspensionThe maximum of 110departure angle40 degrees, while the maximum departure angle of 130 is 28.5 degrees.
If you need the extra seats and cargo capacity of the Defender 130, the Defender 110 is not a suitable replacement. But if you don’t, choosing the 130 over the 110 unnecessarily limits the terrain on which you can safely drive your SUV.
At the same time, the Defender 90 is more cost-effective and maneuverable, thanks to a 17.1-inch shorter wheelbase. It can carry five people without a problem, though its rear seat severely limits cargo space. In use, the 90 can only hold 10.5 cubic feet of luggage.
The new P500 supercharged V8 engine costs less
Prior to the 2024 model year, the Defender series offered a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine with the P525 logo. This means it is rated at 518 horsepower,torque461 pound-feet. However, the purchase of the Defender 110 with this engine would cost more than $110,000.
The new Defender 110 SE for 2024 offers a more affordable route to the satisfaction that comes with a supercharged V8. It costs $18,500 less than the 110 V8, but offers less power than the 110 V8’s 493 horsepower. Torque remains the same at 461 lb-ft. Would you be willing to give up 25 horsepower to keep that money? I think it’s a worthwhile trade-off.
You’ll need that money to fuel the Defender’s V8 engine, which, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has a combined fuel economy of 16 mpg. To be fair, though, the SUV’smild hybridThe combined fuel consumption of the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine is not low, at 18 miles per gallon.
Defender’s P500 V8 is interesting but not compelling
While the Defender’s P400 inline-six engine delivers plenty of power to the 110, purportedly accelerating the SUV to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, the extra thrust of the supercharged V8 engine and the sweet V8 roar at idling and the roar at acceleration are almost overwhelming. The symphonic sound of the engine and exhaust changes the driver’s perception of the Defender’s character, giving this SUV a subtle but undeniable advantage.
Land Rover says the car accelerates from standstill to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. This speed is fast, but in modern times, likeKia EV9Such a family electric car can easily overtake it, and the Defender’s acceleration is not commensurate with its sound. Still, you’ll leave most other vehicles behind, and those drivers won’t doubt that the powerful V8 engine is the reason.
The Defender 110 SE impresses me with its ride and handling on the road. Yes, it drives like an SUV and feels heavy and rugged on the road. But its 22-inch wheels and adaptive air suspension ensure a smooth ride and commendable handling, and for a 5,735-pound SUV, it can travel farther than most vehicles do off-road.
Speaking of which, I’m not taking the Defender 110 SE out into the wild. Locally in Southern California, fire danger was at a high risk level during testing week. Dangerous heat blanketed the desert, and any malfunction could pose a danger. I used to have four rounds of Defender, and they were as capable as you’d expect, with a wide field of vision,ClearSightThe camera is also very useful.
On the contrary, Defender takes on family responsibilities in suburban Los Angeles, driving likeAudi Q7,BMW X5andMercedes-Benz GLELike its German competitors. It even smells like those replacements in the car, and while the Defender has a less luxurious look and features, it’s more rugged.
As for fuel economy, the P500-powered Defender gets 15.9 mpg on my evaluation cycle, roughly in line with the E.P.A.’s official rating. Not bad for a brick SUV weighing nearly three tons, but I’d still ditch the powertrain for the P400 and cut the acceleration time by a few bars to 60 mph in exchange for better gas mileage and a better wallet.
What are the new features of Defender 110?
In addition to the 110 SE’s poorly tuned V8 engine, the base 110 S also adds an all-new County Exterior Pack. Land Rover says it’s a trim treatment inspired by traditional style, including exclusive patterns, a contrasting roof and a matching rear tailgate.
The 2025 Defender Series dropped the 110 SE model, which was obviously a blip I tested for this review. It added a high-priced, high-performance OCTA model, though, with an all-new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate to 60 mph in an amazing 3.8 seconds, and features new 6D Dyn amics technology to eliminate body pitch and roll.
The OCTA driving mode adjusts the SUV to accommodate high-speed off-road, and this version of the Defender includes full chassis protection. Styling modifications improve clearance, and the OCTA can wade 3.3 feet – deeper than any Defender in history. In addition, the 2025 Defender 110 OCTA offers new Body and Soul seating technology for improved comfort, a new color scheme and interior materials, and other changes.
The Land Rover Defender is a more civilised version of a traditional SUV that retains its well-known off-road capabilities while sacrificing little on-road driving power. The 110 offers the best combination of passenger space, cargo space, capability and value in the Defender range. Also, compared to the short 90 and the bulky long 130, I think its looks and proportions are the most appealing.
If you don’t like the Defender, but still want a boxy, high-performance SUV, consider itLexus GXandToyota Land CruiserFor a more original and rugged experience, the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler are also good choices
